Imaginary Somali Gangs and Donald Trump's Notion of Garbage

Last month, Donald Trump had this to say about Congresswoman, Ilhan Omar (D-MN), "When I see somebody like Ilhan Omar, who I don't know at all, but I always watch her--for years I've watched her--complain about our Constitution, how she's treated badly, our Constitution, the United States of America  is a bad place, hates everybody, hates Jewish people, hates everybody. And I think she is she is an incompetent person. She's a real terrible person."

The Congresswoman was born in Somalia. She immigrated to the United States--presumably not on her own--when she was eight years old. She is a naturalized American citizen and part of what some call, "the progressive wing," of the democratic party. That puts her politics further to the left than most democrats, who Trump doesn't like to begin with. So, it really isn't surprising he considers her, "a real terrible person."

That breathless screed last month, however, was just the beginning. This week, as teams of ICE agents moved into Minneapolis to eradicate what has been described as, roaming gangs of illegal Somalian immigrants terrorizing the citizens of Minnesota, (read white people) Mr. Trump went further. Way further. He went full unabashed White Nationalist further.

At a cabinet meeting Donald Trump addressed the media, saying among other things, "...we're going the wrong way if we keep taking in garbage into our country. Ilhan Omar is garbage. She's garbage. Her friends are garbage. These (Somalians) aren't people who work. They aren't people who say, 'Let's go, come on, let's make this place great.' These are people who do nothing but complain." Then he added, "When they come from hell and complain and do nothing but bitch, we don't want them in our country. Let them go back to where they came from and fix it." Just to make sure everyone knew exactly what he was saying, Trump added, "Somalia stinks and we don't want them in our country. I can say that about other countries too."

Ah yes, quite Presidential.

According to the AP there are approximately 116,520 Somalian immigrants living in the United States. Of that number, 64,354 live in Minnesota. They make up 1.12% of the state's population. The vast majority of them, like Ilhan Omar, are naturalized U.S. citizens.

There aren't now and never have been any reports of Somalian, "gangs," terrorizing anyone in Minnesota, or anywhere else. The only real scandal to come out of the community was a welfare/charity scam--something the Trump family has some experience with since they are banned from running charities in New York because of past, let's say, financial irregularities. Charges were brought against 78 defendants and so far, there have been 59 convictions. The AP reports the investigation remains ongoing.

Congresswoman Omar represents Minnesota's 5th district, which is located mainly in Minneapolis. Wikipedia says the ethnic demographics break down is right at 60% white, 17.1% black, 10.1% Hispanic, 6.1% Asian, with other groups under 2% each. In other words, while diverse, it is still heavily Anglo European. In the last election Ilhan Omar won over 56% of the vote in the democratic primary. In the general election, against a republican, she pulled in 74.4% of the vote. That's a lot of people, or as Donald Trump describes them, garbage, who think Ms. Omar is indeed, competent and not a terrible person.

It certainly doesn't sound like anyone in Minneapolis is being, "terrorized," by Somali gangs. Who knows? Maybe in Donald Trump's head they are but just don't realize it. After all, these are citizens of a state which elected Tim Walz as Governor--a man Trump (always the silver-tongued orator) recently described as being, "seriously retarded."

At this point it is easy to think Trump's family history of brute racism and run-away dementia have finally caught up with him. Let's face it, when you spin so far out of control, someone like Nick Fuentes is taking credit for inspiring your words, things do feel like they've gone off pier. Now, even the whole, Haitians are eating pets in Ohio thing, seems tame by comparison.

In the end it doesn't matter if Donald Trump truly believes what he said the other day, or if he was just making a crude bid to shore up his political base. The end result in either case should make any decent person utterly reject both him and those who believe in what he says. It is all not just unamerican, it is inhuman. It would have made, Herr Himmler proud.
