The folks at the Monmouth University Polling Institute made a bunch of phone calls the last few days. Yesterday they released the results of their survey and proved once again a large chunk of this country is not only nuts, but completely ignorant of the nation's laws and constitution.
First, the usual suspects. 32% of respondents believe in their heart of hearts Joe Biden is president of these United States because of run amok voter fraud. Their only proof of this massive crime is Donald John Trump says it happened--well, him and the "My Pillow," guy. Trump's proof seems to be based on the number of people who show up at his rallies, both past and present. In other words, "A lot of people come out and cheer wildly for me, therefore I could not have lost."
That's right, it doesn't make any difference that there were multiple recounts and audits in multiple states, none of which found any wrong doing, or a shift in results. If Don Trump says he was cheated, so, by God, he was.
The poll went on to find 41% of the population thinks voter fraud is a major issue in American elections while 28% thinks it is at least a minor one. Only 29% believe voter fraud is a non issue. This might explain why a lot of us are fine with the rash of draconian voter restriction laws being passed in state legislatures across the land. This includes a bill in AZ introduced by republican representative, John Filmore which would cause the state legislature to go into a special session after each and every election. The legislature would review the election process and results then either accept the way it turned out, or overturn it.
If all this nonsense isn't frightening enough, 11% of those asked think there is probably a way, somehow, for Donald J. Trump to be reinstated to the presidency before the 2024 election. Another 6% think there is definitely a path for him to do so. 21% believe that while he probably won't return to the Oval Office, there might be a way for him to do so. Only 56% of those polled understood there is no legal avenue for Trump to regain power without another scheduled election.
For those outside that 56% let me explain. This is basic 8th grade civics: There is nothing in the constitution of the United States of America that allows such a thing to happen. Steve Bannon can brag at some rally in Arizona the, "decertification," process has begun, but he knows, or should know, there is no such fucking thing as a decertification process. It simply doesn't exist. And while a lot of people might want to believe things--I myself love the thought of a fat German worming his way down my chimney once a year to give me gifts-- wanting it to be true doesn't make it so.
What is in the constitution are a couple of paths to amend it. So if you silly sons of bitches want a legal way to decertify a presidential election propose a new amendment instead of running around thinking it can magically happen. Let me warn you though, it is a long drawn out process. One that would probably take us all well beyond the 2024 election.
My God, will you clowns please go do something useful, like get vaxxed up.
